Summer Hair Care 101 Everything You Need to Know

Keep Hair Healthy and Hydrated All Summer

Hey there, sun lover!

Do you love sunny summer days but detest frizzy, unmanageable summer hair? We get it. Summer can cause plenty of not-so-great hair days.

At The Color Room, we have superb hydrating solutions to get you through the dog days of summer. From drinking more water to using nourishing, ultra-moisturizing hair products, summer hair care is easier than you think.

Below, we answer your most-asked questions about summer care for hair and give you expert advice to keep your hair soft, shiny, and super healthy!

How often should I wash my hair in the summer?

Summer hair gets greasier and sweatier than other times of the year because of the heat and humidity. Not to mention, if you spend time at the pool or beach, salt and chlorine do a number on your tresses.

Most people wash their hair more in the summer to counteract the effects of heat, humidity, and pool chemicals. But you might be washing your hair too much.

You see, balance is key when caring for summer hair.

Washing hair too often strips natural oils from the hair—and guess what happens next?

If you guessed excessive dryness and frizziness, you guessed right!

Washing hair 2-3 times during the summer hits the sweet spot. You keep your hair clean without overwashing it. Of course, you have to play with what works for you. Fine hair does tend to get greasier faster, so you might need to add an extra wash day. Curly or thick hair can dry out pretty fast, so you might find once a week works well for you.

Here are a few tips:

  • Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to avoid drying out your hair.

  • Don't forget the conditioner to replenish moisture.

  • Consider a yummy-smelling dry shampoo in between washes to keep your hair looking and feeling fresh.

We have plenty of hair care products for a frizz-free summer in our salon and spa. L'Oréal’s Liss Unlimited shampoo, hydrating mask, and shine-perfecting blow-dry oil have become a guest and associate favorite.

But everyone’s hair is different. What works for one person might not work for you. Ask your hair stylist to recommend products based on your hair.

Oh, and don’t forget to take advantage of our 2024 SUMMER glow sale. Buy any liter and get one half off through the end of August 2024 to keep your locks looking fabulous.

What are the best ingredients to look for in summer haircare products?

We love this question because not summer haircare products are equal. Some can actually make your hair look worse.

Nourished, hydrated hair always looks better. These ingredients always help you achieve the best summer hair ever:

  • Vitamin C: protects hair from environmental aggressors

  • Hyaluronic acid: attracts and locks-in water molecules for better moisturizing

  • Glycerin: a naturally occurring humectant that maintains the moisture balance of hair

  • Babassu seed oil: moisturizer with restorative properties for scalp and strands

You also want to look for products that include UV protection to protect your hair from the effects of the sun’s harsh rays.

A line we especially love, that’s included in our SUMMER glow sale, is R+CO. Some of our favorite products from this brand include:

  • Television Perfect Hair Shampoo and Conditioner

  • Suncatcher Power C Boosting Leave-in Conditioner

Speaking of R+CO, we have an awesome special through August to keep your hair extra moisturized. Purchase any retail R+Co in-salon mask- or take it home!

Also, can we tell you just how much we LOVE our L’Oreal Professionnel Power Mixes!

These deep conditioning treatments can be cocktailed to your hair concerns, and only take three minutes of your time at the shampoo bowl.

These aid in closing the hair’s cuticle and decreasing damage and dryness.

These can last for up to 25 hair washes and deliver ultimate hydration and health for your hair.

Power mixes are GREAT for color treated, damaged, dry, and gray hair….. Really,  they are great for everyone!

Can I still use heat styling tools during summer?

Who says you can’t rock beach waves and a natural vibe in the Midwest? We think there’s no better time than summer to embrace your hair’s natural texture. The less heat you use on your hair, the more moisturized it stays.

Still, we know au natural isn’t everyone’s style. So, if you want to pull out your heat styling tools this summer, we have your back!

Here are our summer hair care tips for heat styling:

Use ultra-nourishing shampoo and conditioner to prep the hair.

  • Maximize hair strengthening efforts with a weekly hair mask.

  • Towel-dry your hair before blow-drying it.

  • Use a heat-protectant product before blow-drying or using hot styling tools.

  • Keep the tool's temperature between 300 and 380 degrees; only the coarsest hair needs 400 or more degrees of heat.

As far as heat protectant products go, we’re loving Candy Stripe Protect + Prep Detangling Spray this summer that provides 450° heat protection.

Also, if you’re using heat to tame unmanageable hair, consider this question: When was the last time you had your hair trimmed?

Regularly trimming keeps hair healthy and manageable. Schedule a summer hair appointment. Trim split ends or go for a dramatic new cut!

How can I protect my colored hair from fading in the sun?

Alright, without getting too sciency, let's talk about what causes your hair color to fade in the sun. Blame the fade on UV rays.

Color-treated hair and even natural hair can become dull and brassy in the summer because the sun breaks down color and toner molecules. Color-treated hair is also more damage-prone because of the drying color treatments.

You can protect your chemically altered hair by using haircare and styling products designed for color-treated hair. Also, use products with built-in UV protection and wear a hat during those midday hours when the sun’s at its peak between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Hair care for the summer doesn’t have to be hard! When you use professional products, you get better results.

Why?

For starters, most store-bought products are mostly water and cleaning agents (similar to wax), harsh oils, and degreasers. NO JOKE!

Another common ingredient is man-made perfumes full of alcohol.

Professional products are sourced from real ingredients and are pH-balanced for a human’s hair and skin. Professionals who are trained and educated on the hair and skin also formulate these.
